TMD: If it feels like your ear, it's likely an inflamed jaw joint which is immediately in front of your ear. Stress or an altered bite could contribute to this issue but it's likely not a direct consequence of your gum infection. Ibuprofen alternated with tylenol (acetaminophen) should help. If opening wide or chewing doesn't impact it, it may be another issue.

Unusual: But you can have referred pain. More likely you have jaw joint problems (TMJ) and you may need to see an orthodontist to evaluate your occlusion.

Gum or tooth?: Both gums and teeth can refer pain to the ear. Bottom teeth usually send pain just behind the ear. Top teeth just in front of the ear. Tmj issues can also be a problem but infection and ear pain usually go together. The proliferation occurs throughout your body. Hope you find out soon which tooth is causing it or the source of your pain.
