A member asked:

Is resting 2.5 weeks enough after a chevron bunionectomy to go to the gym and workout?

For upper body only: It usually takes a minimum of 6 weeks for the bunion to heal enough to allow weight-bearing exercises. On the other hand, you can do upper body and back exercises, and you can do lower body exercises that do not involve weightbearing on the operative side. However, it is always best to check with your surgeon as he/she is in the best position to tell you when it is ok.

No: Bones take 6-8 weeks to be ~75% healed. At 2.5 weeks, only a soft callus has formed and you run the risk of displacing the correction. At this point, you should be moving the joint to prevent stiffness, but it wont tolerate forceful exercise pressure. You may be allowed upper body exercises, but ask your surgeon.

Elevate!: Keep your dressing clean, dry, and intact, and pick a good spot to sit and elevate the foot. The more you elevate, the less you swell. The less you swell, the less you hurt. Abide by the directions your surgeon gave you for weight bearing as well. 2.5 weeks is awfully short--give yourself more time to heal! ask your surgeon for permission before going back to the gym.

It depends: You will be limited to upper body exercisers. Avoid long periods of standing and avoid excess pressure to the surgical site.
