Many: Most times a tooth will be filled with composite resin. It might also be filled with silver amalgam, gold or even porcelain.

Mostly composites: If you are referring to the sides of front teeth, tooth colored composite fillings are used in almost 100% of the cases. If you are referring to sides of back teeth, we use composite fillings, amalgam fillings and porcelain. Amalgam fillings are being used less and less nowadays. More extensive replacements usually require porcelain onlays, laminates, or crowns.

Resin, amalgam, gold: In reality, all three are possible. Practically speaking, resin is the most common and desirable. Depending on the tooth, ceramic might also be possible. Lateral would ususlly infer a front tooth surface.
