I felt amazed that a cotton placed inside my molar & had dental filling for 10years is still white inside my tooth after being re-opened. why is it?

It was sealed: If no saliva or debris or bacteria seeped into the area where the cotton was, it would be dry and it would not be contaminated. Same thing would happen to a piece of cotton left in a dry, moisture free, sealed bottle for 10, 20, or even 30 years.
