Retainer is forever: You wear retainer more hours (16-20) right after orthodontic treatment was completed, and then over time start wearing it less. Make sure it fits every time you put it on.

My best answer: My best answer to this vague question: wear your retainers as long as you care for the long term. Daily wear is recommended. Most patients wear retainers to bed only after some initial period of time. Life time wear is the profession's recommendation.

Depends: Long term stability depends on the original diagnosis and treatment plan. The literature is clear that widening the distance between the lower canines and flaring the incisors to gain space is not stable and will relapse regardless of how long retainers are worn. Also, changing the original arch form is not stable. If these were not violated retainers can usually be stopped after a year or two.
