I have a lot of trouble falling asleep at night unless i drink and occasionally i'll wake up and not be able to fall back asleep. do i have insomnia?

Insomnia: You have sleep initiation insomnia that you're making worse by drinking alcohol. As the alcohol leaves your brain in the middle of the night it causes you to wake up and often then it's even harder to go back to sleep. Alcohol is not a good sleep aid.

Yes: Insomnia is the symptom of not being able to fall asleep, stay asleep, or waking up too early. It is not necessarily a diagnosis - as there are a variety of medical / sleep disorders that cause insomnia. Alcohol before bed is not a solution - and in general worsens overall sleep quality (e.g. Causes early am insomnia). Please consult with a local sleep specialist for further information.
