Play it safe!: Any bright red blood per rectum is abnormal. This may be as simple as a hemorrhoid problem or as ominous as crohn's disease or ulcerative colitis. I would be worried. Consider that the blood could have come from farther up than the sigmoidoscope reached -- you could have a big problem that went undiagnosed. Allay your fears and get a full colonoscopy to be sure -- the reassurance is worth the cost.
