Elevator: An oral surgeon frequently uses an instrument called an elevator. A skilled dr. Can push "up" and twist, using the surrounding bone as a fulcrum and rotating the wisdom tooth out. That is my take from your description. Watching someone talented at this is very interesting and awe-inspiring.

Outdated technique: That is an outdated technique commonly taught in usa dental schools. Most european schools use the ogram technique. It used biology and physics. Fortunately the inventor lives in texas now and travels the country teaching this method to us dentists. I have been fortunate to learn it 8 years ago. No more pushing!
