Combination therapy: You may need 2 medications. Think about ssris like Lexapro or zoloft for the big picture of generalized anxiety. On top of that, you may need the additional support of a benzodiazepine like valium or xanax (alprazolam) as needed to treat those breakthrough times that are not quieted with your regular mood maintenance medication.

Varies : Anxiety disorders are many, panic attacks occur in all types of anxiety, so having panic attacks does not mean you have panic disorder. Treatment with medication usually, but not invariably ( and every case has its own peculiarities) utilizes an anxiety "modulator" which happens to be some but not all antidpresesants, and a benzo . In our center we avoid short acting benzos such as xanax (alprazolam) ativan.

Anxiety/Panic: Generally, everyone is different and the medicine(s) depend on a number of factors. For anxiety, some people react best to a anti-depressant, while other react well to an anxiolytic. For panic disorder, a combination of the two seems to work best. Xanax (alprazolam) has a short half-life and, in some people, a rebound effect, while clonazapam has a long half-life and is very effective in panic disorder.
