Diabetes is the pits: Poorly controlled diabetes can affect every organ in the body. It damages, teeth, eyes, nerves, kidney, heart, and the blood vessels. Best to control it very aggressively from the very beginning.

Needs Treatment: I'm assuming he is in the hospital. He should be on antibiotics for the infection of the wound and in his blood stream. He will need good glucose control in the hospital and when he is discharged. Wound care will also play a roll in the healing of the wound. Diabetes slows down wound healing.
