See the long answer: Tooth whitening that is performed with the aid of a light (such as the zoom light) is called laser tooth or teeth whitening. From a pure scientific standpoint, the light does absolutely nothing. It is a marketing tool to make you think that the light is doing something. Tooth whitening is accomplished by using powerful oxidizing agents. The agents that are good must be applied by your dentist.

Light Activated : A whitening light that is either led or plasma arc is used in some whitening systems . Zoom uses a led light and lumbrite, a plasma arc. These processes are light activated which triggers a photocatalyst within the whitener that assists in breaking down the hydrogen peroxide into free radicals. This, in turn, speeds up the whitening process. Other systems, opalesence boost, do not require light.

LASER used as light: Laser teeth whitening is when a highly concentrated whitening chemical (usually hydrogen peroxide or a derivative called carbamide peroxide) is placed on your teeth and a laser light source is used to activate the chemical whitening reaction. Studies have found that the light source does not aid in the whitening process and is more for marketing. Other types of light sources pac, led, & halogen.

Laser or UV light : Teeth whitening using laser light or uv light to enhance the whitening effect. Studies show that it does make teeth whiter in the short term. However, after several days it bounces back to appear less white unless a take home whitening kit is also provided. Also, after two weeks there is no difference in teeth whiteness between laser whitening and take home whitening using well fitting trays.
