Talk to your surgeon: Ask your surgeon when to do surgery. If you are not satisfied with the answers you get then seek a second opinion from another oral surgeon.

More information : We need more information from you in order to properly answer your question. Are you currently being treated for tmj? By whom? Was TMJ surgery discussed with you already? Tmj surgery should only be contemplated when all other more conservative methods have already failed and your symptoms are serious enough to consider that route.

TMJ Surgery?: I can't tell you when surgery will happen; that will be up to you and your doctor. Tmj surgery is elective, meaning you get to choose when and whether or not to undergo surgery. Generally speaking, nonsurgical treatment is tried for about 3 months prior to making a decision to proceed with surgery. Surgery may take the form of arthroscopy or arthroplasty or even total joint replacement.

Oh my! Miserable!: Oral surgery for TMJ issues is many times a last resort. Make absolutely sure that you have exhausted all other options. Consider consults with a dentist trained with peter dawson's academy or the pankey institute. Dr piper in st petersburg is world renowned oral surgeon on tm joint problems. If passive, anterior deprogramming splint therapy does not resolve symptoms you may indeed need joint sx.

Ask surgeon: Ask the surgeon. You should have input from both a surgeon and non-surgeon TMJ expert. If you have failed good non surgical treatment, surgery will often help. Consider getting a second surgical opinion.
