Yes: It can cause cramps while lying down as well. It causes a spike in Insulin which drives potassium into the cells and the blood potassium goes down decreasing its availability for uptake into muscles resulting in cramping.

Yes: Dehydration is a major cause of cramping also. Drink more water and lower sugar intake.
