See your MD: Your dr needs to evaluate you and explain the treatment plan. You may be able decrease the dose gradually over a 3 - 4 week period. Some mds may prefer to switch the xanax (alprazolam) to long acting "benzo" med from which you can taper off more comfortably. Again only an md who has evaluated you should decide how best you can be treated.

Xanax (alprazolam): Gradual tapering over several weeks is advised. Talk to your prescribing doc. About plan to do that & be monitored.

Slow taper and...: First, depending on your age, i would suggest a slower taper of xanax, (alprazolam) even as long as 6 months. Another option might be to ask your doctor about switching to a comparable dose of klonopin, which is quite similiar in receptor activity to xanax, (alprazolam) and then tapering the klonopin, which is often easier to do. Since you are on a small dose for a relatively short time i would just talk to your doctor.
