Depends: It depends. For many cancers no "special" diet is helpful. In the adjuvant (post surgery) setting there may be a benefit from diet, exercise, and supplements such as calcium. There are no dietary "magic bullets" despite online hype and conspiracy theories. A few clinical trials are looking at dietary interventions in cancer (colon, prostate). Some patients may need dietary support - eg stomach ca.

?: What cancer and what stage is the cancer?. Most cancers when advanced give loss of weight so high calorie diets are suggested. If the patient cannnot swallow will require a feeding tube either nasogastric or as a peg (tube place directly in the intestines.) with liquid feeding. Otherwise pt should eat everything they can tolerate. Ask the cancer specialist if they suggest anything in particular.

What he likes: Food choice isn't the key to managing cancer or most other illness. Enough protein to be healthy and maintain fitness. If he becomes severely disabled and wasting begins, and he does not want to eat, don't argue -- let him enjoy autonomy. Hoping he gets a cure -- today, a majority of cancer patients do. Best wishes to you both.
