Yes: If properly treated most people will wake up from dt's. During treatment however the person may be heavily sedated.

Yes: I don't know why anyone would think it would go on forever - it doesn't. The typical case of dts lasts for 4-7 days, but the post-acute withdrawal syndrome from alcohol (sleep problems, anxiety) can last much longer, and physical recovery from the harms of alcohol takes months or years. However, it will never end if you continue drinking. See a counselor and/or your doctor and get into treatment.
