No: While many people who are heavy drinkers and develop delirium tremens have underlying liver disease, many others do not. Only about a third of heavy drinkers develop liver problems. However, people with liver disease, especially later state cirrhosis, also have mental status changes from accumulation of ammonia and other toxins, which may increase the chance of dts.
