Occasionally : Occasionally titanium tubes are used. The type of tube that is used is usually the preference of the surgeon. Most tubes will stay 3-12 months, and anything over 24 months should be removed because of the risk of a permanent hole in the ear drum is higher. This would need to be fixed. Some special tubes that stay in longer ar the "t" tubes that can stay in a prolonged period.

Color of ear tubes: The silver or titanium ones were much more common years ago, now more often they are plastic. It used to be that the surgeons thought the metal would stay in longer. You might ask your head and neck surgeon why he/she chose to put in metal.

Many types of tubes: The titanium ones are one of many options for tubes. As your son had the tubes placed as a baby, his ear canals may have been too narrow to get the more standard tubes in (often are blue or white or green) and a "tiny titan" titanium tube might have been easier to fit into smaller ears. There isn't a lot of evidence to say one tube is better than another. Ask your ENT why that tube was chosen.
