A member asked:

I am in my 2nd trimester of pregnancy. i will need a root canal on a tooth that already has a large silver filling. my dentist said not to worry about exposing the fetus to mercury in the process. is there anything to fear? seems conflicting info?

This is a topic of controversy in dentistry. You for sure will expose to a higher amount of mercury vapor when the filling is removed but the procedure is contraindicated or not during pregnancy is still debated. Your tooth needs to be taken care of so unless you sacrifice your tooth with extraction, you probably do not have other choice. If you are still in doubt, you can get a 2nd opinion.

You might be overthinking things a bit. Old amalgam restorations are removed together with high speed suction. Not much to worry about.
