Excellent : Excellent question! you're correct in that being on an antibiotic, any bacterial culture taken most certainly will be affected by them. But no antibiotic kills every bacteria. If your doctor suspects there may be an infecting organism that the Augmentin (amoxicillin and clavulanate) doesn't kill, it won't matter if you're already on Augmentin (amoxicillin and clavulanate) when the culture is taken. He's probably looking for some bacteria other than strep, since Augmentin (amoxicillin and clavulanate) will kill almost all species of strep. Hope this helps. Feel better!
