Sciatica : Sciatica typically comes from a pinched nerve root in your back. This may be due to a herniated disc. I usually treat with oral steroids. Sometimes a medication called Neurontin (gabapentin) helps with pain. You should have an MRI if symptoms persist or if you have weakness or bowel/bladder problems. It usually resolves without an operation but surgery to decompress the nerve may be needed.

Sciatica : Sciatica and lumbar disk herniations are initially treated with rest, anti-inflammatories, pain medication and physical therapy. Patients who fail to improve with these treatments may benefit from steroid injections or surgery. Today surgery can be done minimally invasively with an endoscope through a very small incision with minimal pain, tissue damage and down time. I would recommend initially seeing your primary care doctor to begin treatment. Please see my health guides on endoscopic spine surgery and sciatica and lumbar disk herniations. Good luck!
