Lansing, Finding : Lansing, finding the right dentist for you or them can be difficult. Asking your dentist who they recommend is a good start. In any dentist, your choice should be made based upon comfort and trust. Reviews from your friends and online can also be helpful. You should find a place where your child has fun. Even if they need a filling the priority should always be having a positive experience. It may sound hard to believe, but that is what occurs everyday in my office. I hope this is helpful, michael i. A : A recommendation from another dentist is a great place to start. General dentists who refer children (of their patients) to a pediatric dentist want to know that their patients' offspring are receiving excellent clinical care. The pediatric dentist should have excellent communication skills that enables him/her to relate to both the child and the parent. Additionally, the office staff should be supportive, professional and fun. The office environment should be inviting (and not threatening) to the child. Finally, find an office that emphasizes prevention (utilizing sealants, Fluoride and conservative dentistry) and educates parents and child as to how to best care for their teeth. Good habits start young!

Ask: Ask if the dentist is a qualified pediatric dental specialist who limits his practice to just children and special needs patients. Ask you family dentist which pedodontist they prefer, and why. Ask the area orthodontists which pedodontists they prefer to work with, and why.

Recommendations: It is good that your pediatrician recommended one to you. That is a good start. I would also ask other parents in the area. Once you have a list you need to check credentials and make sure they are a "pediatric dental specialist". You can also find list of Pediatric dentists at: http://www.aapd.org/finddentist/search/?Zip=&Miles=&Advanced=1
