Expected: It is common (and expected) to have swelling after any surgery. The swelling typically is as its maximum by 1-3 days post-operatively but some bruising may remain for up to 2-3 weeks post-operatively. It's also not uncommon to have some mild swelling for up to a month or two after more extensive surgery. In case of severe, sudden, or painful swelling, immediately contact your plastic surgeon.

Yes: Usually most of swelling on the 1st and 2d post operative days. The usage of ice compresses right after surgery can reduce the bruising and swelling. Each patient is different as to amount of swelling after surgery. In general you should expect 5-7 for most swelling to dissipate. The extend of surgery is a big factor.

Normal Inflammation: Your skin and soft tissues swell a bit after any surgical procedure or injury due to regional inflammation. The inflammation is part of the healing response and a normal occurrence. Cool compresses can help during the first 1-2 days. If there is pain, rash, or itching involved you should make sure that it is not an allergic reaction to the stitches or anything that you may be putting on the area.

Normal: Everything swells after surgery. Your eyes are extra-sensitive to trauma and tend to swell more than other body parts.

Normal post-op, but: Swelling for the first week is normal and this should subside to a near-normal appearance at about 2-3 weeks. Tiny amounts of swelling may persist for three months, but only you and your doctor would notice this. Swelling beyond that point suggests a problem that should prompt a discussion with the doctor who did the surgery.

Normal: After any surgery there is swelling. If the membrane of the eye itself is swollen you may have dry eyes. See your surgeon for evaluation and treatment.
