Alcohol : Alcohol does not directly contribute to angina related to atherosclerosis, but rarely can cause spasm of the coronary arteries which is an uncommon cause of angina called variant angina. Assuming you have traditional angina from atherosclerosis, you do not need to quit drinking as long as you drink alcohol in moderation (2 drinks per day in men or 1 drink per day in women). Moderate amounts of alcohol are actually good for the cardiovascular system, probably through the favorable effect on cholesterol. Excessive alcohol consumption can raise blood pressure, cause cardiac arrhythmias, and can be directly toxic to the heart muscle resulting in a cardiomyopathy where the heart becomes enlarged and weak.
