In terms of the : Surgical approach tge paraspinal muscles are affected but they are typically not cut but dissected off the spinous processes where they attach to the bone and resewn together after laminectomy. The supraspinous, interspinous & ligamentum flavum are the ligaments removed with the bony roof or lamina which includes the peak of this bone known as the spinous process.

Cervical: The cervical paraspinal muscles will be taken off the spine for the surgery. The muscles will heal back to the remaining bone. Most folks have some neck pain related to this after the surrey, but are much better from the surgery for the reason the surgery was done. Ie, the nerve pain should be much improved and worth the trade off.

Cervical Laminectomy: A laminectomy will remove the posterior arch of the vertebra over the spinal cord typically for stenosis. With this bone removal, the paraspinal muscles lose their attachment point and can contribute to abnormal alignment changes of the cervical spine. A laminoplasty does not eliminate the bone and ligaments over the spinal cord but reshapes the spinal canal and is preferable in my hands.
