Tolerance/withdrawal: Alprazolam (brand name xanax (alprazolam)) is a short-acting, non-sedating tranquilizer that is quite habit-forming. Depending on dosage & duration of use, it may need to be decreased very gradually over weeks or even longer. Sometimes xanax (alprazolam) is replaced with a similar drug that is easier to stop. This is best discussed with the prescribing doctor, who may also offer other remedies for the insomnia.

Taper slowly: Once dependent on high doses of xanax (alprazolam) (read addicted), withdrawal symptoms are likely. Best to see your prescribing doctor about tapering slowly off the drug. Sudden discontinuation can result in typical withdrawal symptoms including high anxiety, elevated blood pressure, and even seizure.
