Why is baby aspirin recommended for people with heart problems?

Prevention: Aspirin is a platelet inhibitor. Platelets help to form clots. If platelets do not stick to each other, there is less clot formation. If on has clogged arteries to the heart muscle, and cholesterol deposits in the arteries, clots can form. A clot in the heart arteries is what causes a heart attack. Prevents clots: When cholesterol forms in the wall of an artery, it makes the lining of the artery more likely to break open. When it opens, the body responds by trying to heal the opening with a blood clot which initially forms with platelets. If this clot closes off the entire artery, it causes a heart attack. Aspirin and other antiplatelet medications keep the clot from blocking all the blood flow.
