Specialization: My colleagues are all correct in their descriptions: the specialties come from greek word definitions: ortho=straight or correct. Endo= within, as in the insides of a tooth perio= surrounding. Deals with structures surrounding the tooth: gums and bone.

Periodontists deal with the supportive structures of the dentition (bone, gum tissue) and their pathology. Orthodontists deal with malocclusions of teeth, jaw relationships, and their coordination and corrections.
