Ice early : Use ice compresses on the side of the jaw off and on for the first 24 hours at 10-15 minute intervals. Good pressure with gauze sponges over the first few hours. Take nsaids such as 800 mg Ibuprofen every 8 hours for the first 2-3 days. Soft diet, head elevated at night. Limit physical activity. Don't smoke and after 48 hours begin warm salty water rinses.

Ice: Ice packs applied to the side of the face immediately following surgery will help reduce the swelling. The soreness can be alleviated with warm salt water rinses, and application of moist heat to the side of the face after the ice packs are discontinued. Follow the postop instructions provided and keep the surgical sites clean.
