Root canal: For a baby tooth the top of the pulp is removed and a solution of formocresol is used to 'mummify' the remaining tissue. The tooth is restored and will function normally until lost.

Necessary: This would usually occur in the primary molars: these teeth are replaced by the bicuspids. These primary molars usually stay in the mouth until the child is ten to twelve years old. So if large cavities invade the pulps of these teeth when the child is six or seven, a root canal is indicated to keep the teeth in place until the bicuspids erupt.
