Antibiotics?: Usually a root canal is needed because there is pain and/or infection. Antibiotics may be taken prior to a root canal to manage the infection, if there is any. But, for the most part, there is nothing needed prior . . . Just get it done! that is the treatment!

RCT Preparation: Nothing special is required prior to having root canal therapy unless you normally need to be premedicated with antibiotic coverage either for certain heart conditions or orthopedic prostheses or if you currently have an infection. Ask the dentist who is planning treatment for you if you need to know anything prior to your visit.

This varies...: If the tooth is infected i often will recommend an antibiotic for 3-4 days prior to performing the root canal treatment. I would want assurance from my dentist on why the root canal treatment is needed. Some possible treatments may include adjusting the bite on the tooth in question and assessing the periodontal health of the tooth.
