Nothing: The principals of root canal therapy are to clean and disinfect the canals and then fill the canal to seal them. Their are many techniques to accomplish both! after doing more than 20, 000 cases, i can tell you the term holistic means nothing. Some root sealing materials are thought to be safer, hence the term holistic. These materials are not around the bloodstream so i'm my opinion, not better!

Materials used: The main difference is in materials used to perform the root canal. With all due respect to dr. Grossman, who clearly has much more experience with root canals than i ever will, some materials appear better at preventing root canals from harboring chronic infections, which can be a serious problem. See http://www.Mgoldmandds.Com/rctchoices.Htm for the best discussion on this complex issue i've seen.

In my opinion only: I believe that dentists as a group, by nature, are always looking to provide the best dental care possible to our patients. Anything that enables us to do that with the best methods, materials, ease and most importantly successful outcome is our goal. In my opinion, 'holistic' rct is probably a term unknown, at best, to dentists, and looked upon with some skepticism. I question the value.
