Antihistamines: Different medications affect different people in different ways. Doxylamine is an antihistamine. These antagonize or block histamine 1 receptors. Blocking this receptor will make many people sleepy.. Usually the body adapts to this over a few weeks however. Still for some blocking his receptor does not make them particularly sleepy. Evidently you are one. Let your doctor know.

Unisom: It is a mild sleep aid. You might want to ask your doctor about alternatives and what the cause of insomnia is, so that can be treated.

NOT FOR EVERYONE: One pill does not fit all so can try other sleep aides like otc melatonin or see your pcp for a prescription strength. Also, want to make sure that you are not missing reasons for the insomnia whether it is mood or pain or something else. Discuss with your pcp.

The best: For you to know if this medication is helpful to you, is to make a fair trial of following your doctor's prescription, to see if it improves the quality of your sleep or not. However if you have concerns regarding the intake, let your doctor know. There are sleeping hygiene habits and techniques that can help too. Good luck to you!
