A member asked:

Can epileptic seizures change with time?

2 doctors weighed in across 2 answers

Yes, but complex: We see in adolescent epilepsy, with perhaps initial absence or convulsive szs becoming complex partial events in 20's and 30's. Many mixed disorders exist such as lennox-gastaut or juvenile myoclonic epilepsy which are different as pts get older. Seizures are triggered by fatigue, stress, change in altitude, infection, fever, some medications, new illnesses, lack of sleep, aging.

Yes: Seizures may be altered by medical or surgical treatment. Sometimes they may change due to genetic factors (some underlying conditions improve or worsen with time). Age related brain changes may alter the appearance of seizures. Always best to discuss the appearance of a new seizure type with the neurologist.
