Calculus : When you develop calculus (tartar) on your teeth scaling and root planing is the proper way to remove it. It is also used to prevent or treat different forms of periodontal disease.

Bone loss neat tooth: There is connective tissue between your teeth and the surrounding bone, called pdl. (periodontal ligament). Calculus accumulation around tooth structure causes bone loss and its the beginning of periodontal disease, creating "pockets" of calculus and "bad" bacteria that eat up bone support from your teeth, to the point they became mobile and you cold loose your teeth.

Trying to help you: If dentist recommended scaling he's trying to help you. You probably have hard accretions on your teeth either above or below the gum line that can cause gum recession. Have the calculus (tarter) removed and follow dentist's recommendations to prevent the problem from occurring again.
