Ada.xcom: The american dental association or the academy of general dentists, have websites that explain many aspects of dewntistry such as what you ask. Basically the dentist removes the nerve from the tooth and fills the void with a material and seals the tooth against infection. It is a painless procedure today and usually takes about one hour for a bd certified endodontist.

Removes nerve: A root canal is our term for removing the nerve of a tooth, cleaning out the inside where the nerve was as good as possible and replacing the nerve space with a filler. The nerve space is reached by making a hole in the top of the tooth or on the backside...Depending on which tooth you are having treated.

Cleaning and sealing: Root canal is the treatment that involves cleaning and sealing the pulp canals of a tooth whose nerve tissue has deteriorated and died ( necrosed). Today, this treatment is done painlessly and comfortably with using high tech equipment such as nickel titanium rotary files, ultrasonic sterilization of canals, apical locators and phase ii gutta percha thermafils.

Damaged Nerve Tx: Irreversible nerve damage can only be treated by making an access hole into the tooth, removing the damaged tissue and sealing the canals (root canal) or by removing the tooth. Root canals are an invaluable tool allowing us to save teeth otherwise doomed to removal.
