Pulp : Pulp capping is generally done for immature teeth (permanent teeth in children with deep decay and little or no symptoms). Because the pulp is different in children than in adults, pulp capping is helpful to allow young roots to complete their formation. In adults, the pulp does not repair as well and root canal treatment is usually necessary. If you have symptoms (hot, cold, chewing, biting) you are not a candidate for a pulp cap. If you have a pulp cap you are very likely to need root canal therapy in the future. That means another dental procedure in the future.

No. : No. Pulp capping is done when there is a very small invasion of a healthy pulp by decay or mechanically. A root canal removes an unhealthy nerve and seals the interior of the tooth from further infection. They are not the same thing at all. Your dentist is aware of pulp capping, and has suggested what he or she felt was the proper treatment for you.
