A member asked:

Can you perform root canal filling in a multi-visit procedure without use of local anesthesia?

Yes: If the dental pulp is dead, it is quite possible to do this. If the pulp is still vital, local anesthetic will be necessary so it depends on the status of the pulpal tissue in the tooth. In some multi-rooted teeth, it is possible to have both necrotic and hyper-reactive tissue within different parts of the same tooth so sometimes both conditions are present, requiring the use of a local.

Sometimes: Although there is no nerve left in the tooth a rubber dam is placed with a clamp on the tooth and a local anesthetic ensures that the clamp doesnt cause any discomfort.

Yes & No: But sure can be done, depends on how the provider divides the steps to be undergone in a multi visit root canal between various visits, and it is totally based on the findings and decided on a case by case basis.

Discuss with Dentist: This question would be one for your dentist. The ability to do this would depend greatly on your tolerance for pain. Personally i couldn't do it.
