Control inflammation: Lbp is an extremely common phenomenon, and disc disease is a common cause. The key is to remain active with exercise that doesn't exacerbate the pain ( trial & error to find). A structured lumbar therapy program to keep musculature strong to prevent further disc degeneration is crucial as well. For acute exacerbations, controlling the inflammation mediators from disc is key (epidurals option here).

Who told you so?: All discs wear out over time with the most degenerative usually not being the painful ones. In any case, weight control & not smoking are important or all else is a minor treatment. Then regular exercise, a back support & otc medication if no contraindications to start. If not improving, see a spine specialist for more guided treatment based on further evaluation. This could include pt & meds.
