I still have finger and hand swelling after hand surgery. is this normal?

Can be: Some swelling after an injury or surgery is common. It is however important to control the swelling which will help with movement of the fingers. Elevation icing and the motion can be used. If this does not help therapists can sometimes be needed to help with the swelling.

Depends:: Swelling of the fingers and hands is the rule, not the exception, after hand surgery. The degree and duration depends on what kind of surgery it was and how long after the surgery you are experiencing the swelling. Generally, we ask our patients to keep their operated hand elevated above the level of their heart for 48-72 hours after surgery; this helps to reduce swelling.

Can be common: Postop swelling is not unsual. Elevation and gentle digital range of motion are a few simple steps to help decrease swelling (edema). Placing the hand above the level of the heart (e.g. Left chest) allows gravity to facilitate the edema control. A tight postoperative dressing may also be carefullly loosened. If you were placed in a splint, you should wear as instructed by your doc.
