Can silicone breast implants stay in for life?

Possible not probabl: While I have removed intact implants that have been in for over 35 years, it is unlikely that at your age (29), current implants with last for your percieved life span. Therefore, while it is possible, it is more likely that you will require removal and replacement for a variety of different reasons including rupture but not limited to size change or scarring or shape change with aging.

Unlikely: Breast implants will need replacement in the vast majority of their owners. The bodily reactions with silicone gel cause me to recommend routine replacement at roughly a ten year interval.

YES: It is possible that you could have one implant surgery and not have to have another one. This however, is not likely. Over time, the implant may have some issues that may require another surgery to manage. Also, depending on your age and health, your breast shape may change. Down the road, you may want to have a bigger (or possibly smaller) implant especially if you were to get pregnant.

Usually not: Whatever man puts in a body usually has to be taken out at some point. Most will tell you that breast implants are great, but not lifetime devices. Most patients will have another breast operation during their lifetime. That said, everyone is different. See a board certified plastic surgeon and they will guide you through the process.

Not usually: Standard silicone gel implants come with an fda recommendation to change them at 10 years. The new allergan style 410 (aka gummy bear) does not have a recommendation to exchange them, thus theoretically they could be permanent.

As long as no probs.: Breast implants, saline or silicone, are not "lifetime" devices. This means they can wear out before you do. If you are happy with the size, shape, softness and there is no evidence of a leak, silicone breast implants do not need to be changed. There is no expiration date, and there is no recommendation to replace implants that are without problems at 10 years.
