A member asked:

Wisdom teeth taken out 3 days ago -- is it common to still be a little numb?

Not that uncommon: Over the age of 18 or so, there is an increased risk of irritation of the nerve that runs in our lower jaw that gives feeling to our lip, tongue and cheek. Do not panic, often this numbness will go away within a few days to weeks. Be sure to inform your surgeon of this issue at your follow up appointment.

Possibly: Sometimes the roots of the wisdom teeth are very close to the mandibular nerve, and this nerve can be traumatized during the extraction process. This usually resolves within 7-10 days. If symptoms worsen or persist past 10 days i would have an evaluation by the oral surgeon who extracted the teeth.
