Dentist/Oral Surgeon: Do you really want to do it yourself? Assuming the abscess is ready to drain, you need dependent drainage, ie where gravity will allow the pus to continue to drain out of the abscess. Open (incise) the abscess at this point and keep it open.

By opening the tooth: A tooth abcess has to do with bacterial byproducts that your body is trying to get rid off. If the tooth is opened and the nerve and infection cleaned through a root canal treatment, the infection should cease.

See a DDS asap!: If you mean personally and on your own?: you shouldn't even if you wanted to and could! you could easily cause the infection to spread to other parts of your body causing more serious problems. See a dentist asap to determine the cause of the problem (there are many possibilities) as well as options and appropriate professional treatment. You also need to be on antibiotics right away!

I would not...: Please seek the attention of a dentist. If handled improperly an abscess can lead to more serious infections spreading to other parts of the body including the heart. This truly is not something to manage on your own. I realize people want to save money and time, but an abscess is nothing to mess with on your own, honestly and humbly...
