Could be big: It depends on the amount of excess tissue and the build of the patient; generally it is a time consuming surgery and a lot of tissue is exposed and cut and sewn with drains usually left in place after. There is usually a long recovery.

They vary in extent: A large tummy tuck or a lower body lift (an extended version of the tummy tuck) is quite large. A mini tummy tuck is smaller. They vary relative to the problem they are designed to address.

Always risks: Any surgical procedure carries risks, and tummy tuck is no exception. The things you can do to minimize your risk is to see a board certified plastic surgeon, be honest about your medical history and expectations, and optimize your health and weight before surgery.

Major: A tummy tuck or an abdominoplasty is major surgery that requires the skill of a plastic surgeon and a period of healing. It should not be entered on a whim. A carefully planned surgery is best for you to have excellent results. Start with a consultation and read up on it.

Major Recovery: The tummy tuck operation is an excellent operation for the right patient; however, it is associated with a major recovery period, often underestimated by patients and surgeons. I tell patients, that they may be at approximately 70 to 80% of their usual energy level one month after the operation and that it may take several additional months before they reach their full strength.

Tummy Tuck Surgery: A full Tummy Tuck takes approximately 3-4 hours of operating room time and is typically an out patient procedure. The surgery can be performed under either IV or General Anesthesia, though I prefer the use of IV anesthesia for tummy tucks. Patients are typically able to resume work and driving after 3-4 weeks. All surgery carries risk so be sure to consult with a board certified Plastic Surgeon.
