Good oral hygiene?: A patient can brush and floss after every meal and think they have immaculate hygiene. But some people are more prone to plaque and build-up or even gum disease. Your dentist needs to explain all options available and also check to see what your home care consists of. Maybe it has to be changed.

Previous gum problem: Gum disease usually does not have any signs or symptoms at early stages and therefore a general dentist would recognized these problems and refer you to a periodontist. Also if you have past diagnosis of periodontitis, you may want to reexam with your periodontist to confirm the controll of the disease. Refractory periodontitis is also a common problem and hard to diagnose and treat.
