You need to see a: Dentist to determine the etiology (cause) of your TMJ discomfort. Is it unilateral or bilateral? Is there a click / pop associated with opening / closing etc. The cause needs to be determined before treatment can be recommended because there are different treatment modalities available. Xrays / mri's can also be helpful. Consult your dentist for a baseline workup first.

Begin with diagnosis: First, you need a more specific diagnosis. Are your symptoms related to the muscles or joints themselves? Are you dizzy, having headaches, or joints painful and popping? Treatment can me as simple as antiinflammatort meds, moist heat and relaxation. Can also include fixing your bite with an orthosis, orthodontics or reconstruction. Or joint surgery as a last resort.

A few things: Depends on symptoms, and cause of symptoms. 3 signs of TMJ dysfunction: joint noises, joint pain & limited oral opening. Self treat with soft diet, jaw exercises, massage, heat/cold, OTC pain meds. A splint or physical therapy would be next. Occasionally muscle relaxants, biofeedback. Xrays are done for diagnosis. Surgery usually reserved for serious symptoms not responsive to other treatments.
