Bronchitis: The most common cause of coughing up blood while ill is bronchitis. That isn't serious and will go away when the bronchitis improves. If you cough up blood after recovery, or when you are not experiencing an episode of respiratory illness, it must be investigated to find the source.

Many things: Possibly due to the trauma to the throat caused by coughing. There are tiny blood vessel get broken and mix with saliva. You may also have some small amount of bleeding in the upper digestive system or lungs. If you are smoking any substance, throat tissue gets irritated leading to higher risk of bleeding. If this persists see a doctor or if the bleeding worsens.
