Yes: Pain and swelling from a wisdom tooth is caused by infection around the tooth. Antibiotics along with analgesics are often prescribed to get rid of the pain. Consult your dentist or oral surgeon and get the painful area examined; you might or might not need the wisdom tooth pulled after the pain subsides.

Definitely: A very common finding for patients having problems associated with a wisdom tooth is swollen gums overlying a wisdom tooth that is partially exposed in the mouth. Food and bacteria get trapped under the tissue and a localized infection (pericoronitis) can occur.
