Sedation: Oral surgeons are well trained for IV concious sedation. Sometimes they use the services of anesthesiologist for challenging cases. Surgeon may ask for cardiology consultation prior to surgery.

Infection or....: If you are an older patient you may have residual periodontal defects that need treatment. Impacted teeth can impinge on the nerve causing a neurotaxis, delayed healing or altered sensation. Sharp bone under the gum keeps it sore. Make sure no tooth is left behind or cavity around it.Worst case is neuroma formation but highly unlikely. It can take months for normal feeling to return. See the oms.

Varied: Could be many causes. Most common delayed healing in socket due to bone fragments or residual infection. Tooth in front of wisdom tooth could have infection or periodontal problem. See an oral surgeon to find out what problem is.
