Usually nothing: Depending upon the type & frequency. You may experience palpitations but get checked out with a holter monitor to get answers.

Arrhythmia: A regularly irregular rhythm typically relates to a timed premature beat (either pvc- premature ventricular contraction, or pac-premature atrial contraction). It can occur spontaneously or as a result of extrinsic stressors than result in Adrenalin secretion.

Ectopy: The heart beats by electrical conduction system through the cardiac muscles - sometimes it can skip a beat or beat irregularly - these are known as arrythmias. There are benign kinds (such as psvt, pvc) and more dangerous kinds such as atrial fibrillation. An ekg will give you the answer.

A 38-year-old member asked:
I've read it is normal if you heart skips a beat or beats late once in a while. Is this true?

Dr. Asaf Presente answered

Yes: Very often healthy people will have small irregularities in their rhythm. It is not normal to have significant symptoms from this or for the irregular beats to continue beyond a few seconds - if this is happening then this person should be evaluated by a physician for blood work, have an ekg and may require a holter monitor (looks at rhythm over time).

A 38-year-old member asked:
How come my heart skips a beat very frequently?

Dr. Stuart Higano answered

"Skipped beats": Most people have ectopic or early beats from time to time, such as the PVC (premature ventricular contraction) shown. Some people feel these early beats and some do not. Their significance depends on whether they are due to underlying heart disease. A thorough evaluation is important, although they may be due to excessive fatigue, stress, excess caffeine use or other stimulants.
